Gas Turbine Exhaust Silencers

Jeff Cozbey

Inspecting and upgrading Exhaust Side Silencer panels is an after thought for most. Each Plant has so many expenses when it comes to maintaining the equipment for the ability to run the GT. Particularly for Peaking units, the exhaust system is often not even inspected on a frequent basis. However, there is a significant price to pay if not maintained. Schock worked with customers that could not run at all due to danger, or run at reduced load due to debris blockage in gas stream. Schock keeps a comprehensive list of North American power plants including information such as supplier (if known) of each component. Using this data, along with age and run conditions of units, we can often predict the likelihood of equipment problems. We have a proven design base that is applied to each GT type once actual site run conditions are analyzed. Additionally we understand the pressure of economic constraints as well as keeping outages as short as possible. Our reference list includes every type/position of Exhaust Silencer Upgrade/Change out, and we think we have perfected each style (with site constraints in mind). Some upgrades can be accomplished in just days, with the average approximately 2 weeks. ALL Exhaust Silencer Panels wear out, but some much sooner than others. When your plant comes to the point that an upgrade is mandatory, the Vendor you choose will have ramifications for many years to come. We have inspected many designs that barely survive past a one year warranty, and others that look perfect after decades. Please allow the experts to inspect and offer solutions (if an upgrade is necessary) that the plant won't have to worry about again for decades.
