Gas Turbine Exhaust

Jeff Cozbey

Each Gas Turbine Exhaust can be unique regardless of the size or OEM. Schock just completed (2) FS7B Vertical Exhaust systems from the ground up. The challenges started with the design. There are very few straight up FS7B's in North America (a dozen or so) so there is not much reference material available. The second or equally challenging task was attenuating the stack noise to an extremely quiet level due to the proximity of an apartment complex. Schock was also limited by stack height due to existing permitting. Once our design was ready we had a few months prior to the beginning of the outages to deliver the equipment to site. This particular location was so congested, we delivered based on "just in time" approach so we did not have to move items several times. Let me tell you, this took quite an effort! Our Construction manager Mr. Rocck Mallory had our daily & hourly tasks planned out in finite detail. Like any jobsite, we have bumps along the way from difficulty getting trucking companies to pick up our equipment, lightning strikes to equipment onsite, interfaces not matching existing drawings, and on and on. However, I am very happy to report completion of both units early and a very happy customer. The exhaust stacks run cool on the exterior, are very quiet, and very aesthetically pleasing.
